SHALINI
SENGUPTA
STUDY, STUDY!
I am a Physics major, and then did an MBA from the Goa Institute of
Management. I was one of the star alumni of the institute.
GETTING HERE
It was totally a step-by-step beginning, in fact
quite a modest start with Karvy Consultants and then UTI Securities Exchange
Limited (UTISEL) as dealer/broker. I also set up the depository services for
the organisation and I went on to becoming the Regional Head.
ONE DAY ON THE JOB
My day starts at 9 in the morning. The first half
hour usually goes in e-mailing people and answering mail. Most of the creative
work is done in the morning. Day-to-day administrative work, thought provoking
concepts, portfolios, structuring of ideas into concrete plans take up most of
my day. My team starts updating me on the markets from 10 am as the market
opens at that time. They usually track major movements in the international
markets like crude oil price, dollar depreciation. I have a late lunch at 3 pm
as the market closes by 3.30 in the afternoon. In the evening, most of my time
goes into researching any particular stock or looking at new ideas. I am home
by 6.30 in the evening.
WALLET FACTOR
I started with Rs 5,000 a month and after that I earned
a decent salary with Azim Premji as his CIO and personal wealth advisor. Right
now I am on my own with my firm Das Capital Management & Advisors Private
Ltd.Today, an experienced wealth manager in the corporate sector can earn as
much as Rs 75 lakh- 2 crore per annum.
THE BEST PART ...
Time to spend with your family is adequate along
with job satisfaction. At the age of 34, I am running my own firm and our
biggest strength is handling NRIs. My job gives me independence to do what I
want to with my firm.
IF ONLY ...
If I had been in the corporate scenario today I
would have made huge money as I have said how much an experienced wealth
manager can earn.
BENCHMARK
My brother Tanmay Das who’s also the co-founder of
my company and Azim Premji.
TIPPING POINT
Integrity, integrity and integrity. This is the
cornerstone of the profession. We deal with trust and it is very difficult to
build trust in this world. One should communicate trust to build one’s career.
